Make an impact with those 1,800 billion euros in pension money (because that money is yours)

We don’t usually come back to a topic this soon. But this one’s worth it. ❤️We talk a lot about what we can do for the climate and a more equitable world. Consume more consciously. Build more sustainable businesses. Yet there’s one massively powerful tool almost no one talks about: pension money.

Because it’s such an overlooked yet critical topic, our co-founder Willemijn Verloop wrote a sharp opinion piece (in Dutch) for MT/Sprout and it’s well worth reading.

Do you know that Dutch pension funds collectively manage nearly €1.8 trillion? This is more than the country’s entire GDP! That money is contributed by millions of people who pay premiums every month. It’s actively invested, every single day. And most of us have no idea where it goes.

That’s strange, when you think about it. Pension money exists to secure our future. It would be absurd if that same money contributed to a world where that future becomes less certain. Yet that’s exactly what’s happening right now.

The good news: everyone has more influence than they think. Pension funds exist for their participants. They’re legally required to account for their investment decisions. And they listen, especially when participants start asking the same question, en masse.
