Tijl Hoefnagels in Het Financieele Dagblad

Het Financieele Dagblad looked at the growing need for technologies that help society adapt to a changing climate, and asked our partner Tijl Hoefnagels for his view.

Our approach has always been rooted in mitigation. We back solutions that tackle climate change at its source, because that is where lasting impact begins. But reducing future harm does not remove the need to deal with the effects already here.

That is where resilience comes in. Not as a shift away from mitigation, but as a practical response to a changing reality.

Tijl points to cooling technologies gaining ground as temperatures rise, wildfire prevention becoming more urgent, and food systems innovation helping crops withstand heat and drought while still pushing up yields.

We can scale technologies like these. But venture capital is not the answer to every challenge. Water management, infrastructure and spatial planning need public and institutional capital instead.

As Tijl puts it, the real risk isn’t a lack of interest in adaptation. It’s public budgets shifting away from mitigation to fund it.
